The PSTAR, originally standing for Pre-Solo Test of Air Regulations is now called a Student Pilot Permit. This is a written examination that a student studying for their Private Pilot Licence in Canada must pass before being awarded their Student Pilot Permit. In order to fly an aircraft you will need to obtain a certificate that permits you to use a VHF radio. Pilots who hold a valid Private, Commercial or Airline Transport Pilot Licence in the Helicopter Category and who wish to apply for a Private Pilot Licence – Aeroplane shall demonstrate their knowledge by completing a 20-hour ground school and writing a Transport Canada multiple choice exam.
The PARAC exam is based on subjects contained in Air Law and Aeronautics – General Knowledge (Airframes, Engines and Systems, Theory of Flight, Flight Instruments and Flight Operations) and focuses on the differences between helicopters and airplanes.
